Vision & Mission Statement

Our Vision

 We are St Luke’s.

A community of faith, learning and partnership.

Journeying together, we strive to live the gospel so that all may enjoy the fullness of life.

We look with wonder at our world and embrace learning through inquiry, through action, through reflection to realise our potential.

We celebrate diversity and we welcome the opportunity to live and work together.

Our Mission

At St Luke the Evangelist ….

We promote a culture of continuous Professional Learning to deliver consistent and collaborative Curriculum based on data to enable each student to flourish within a Local Catholic Parish context and the wider community.

Faith

At St Luke’s, Faith is at the centre of who we are and what we do here. We are so proud of our Catholic social teachings and traditions but embrace families of all faiths and the rich traditions they bring to our community.  Such diversity adds to the colourful tapestry that makes up the beautiful community at St Lukes. First and foremost, we nurture a sense of personal spirituality in every child. They come to know that God is present to them in the ordinary and extraordinary parts of our day.

Religious Education is an important and valued element of our Catholic school curriculum. It involves the unity of the head, the heart and the hands. With this in mind, at St. Luke’s we aim to:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of our faith (the Head)

  • Engage in dialogue and prayer that allows for deep and reflective learning (the Heart)

  • Apply our knowledge, skills and practices to be a difference in the world (the Hands)

We draw on families to support children as they develop a personal relationship with God and our St Luke’s Parish supports children and families in preparing for the sacraments of:

  • Reconciliation in Year 3

  • First Eucharist in Year 4

  • Confirmation in Year 6

As part of God’s mission for us, our children have opportunities throughout their primary school years, to be actively engaged in being of service to others and being stewards of God’s creative influence in our world through:

  • Mini Vinnies,

  • Student Representative Council (SRC),

  • Year 6 Student Leadership program- ‘Faith and Mission’ and ‘Environment’ student leaders

  • Making connections within our local community- Year 5 visits to local Kindergartens and Early Learning Centres

Wellbeing
StLuke_s-the-Evangelist-Blackburn_Sth-242.jpg

At St Luke’s, we prioritise the important relationship between Wellbeing and Learning. We work to help our children feel connected and engaged in their learning in a safe and supportive environment, and to develop the social and emotional skills to grow into happy, respectful, well-balanced and successful members of their school and wider community. Child safety underpins every aspect of school life. Our children are empowered to have a voice through opportunities on the Student Representative Council, Student Leadership programs and lunchtime clubs.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an important part of all learning across the curriculum and is integrated into daily classroom teaching through the Personal and Social Capability Curriculum, supporting children to develop skills in Self-Awareness and Management and Social Awareness and Management.

A key component of our school’s approach to mental health and wellbeing is the ‘Smiling Mind’ program, a mindfulness-based social and emotional learning curriculum which equips children with the skills they need to thrive in life, by building healthy minds and engaged classrooms. Weekly lessons are taught in every classroom.

At St Luke’s, the children and teachers begin every school day with a Getting Ready to Learn morning circle time. This is an opportunity for children to get ready to learn by sitting together, greeting each other by name, using a positive primer to bring a sense of fun to the start of each day and to make any announcements about the day. Together, prayer and Christian meditation complete the day’s beginning.

All members of our community are called to be Respectful, Responsible and Safe and we work together to promote positive behaviour in all areas of the school. Positive behaviour is explicitly taught and reinforced and prevention approaches are emphasised. This Positive Behaviour for Learning framework has been embedded throughout all aspects of school life. We use a restorative approach to resolve conflict and to empower children to have a voice when they feel they are part of a conflict. Parents are also part of conflict resolutions so that children can feel they are being supported in a consistent, positive way.

Our Student Wellbeing Leader is responsible for working with teachers, parents and external specialists in supporting the wellbeing of all our children and staff.

NURTURING FUTURE LEADERS
Student Voice & Leadership

Leadership Programs

Years 1-5: Student Representative Council - listening to what concerns children the most and creating initiatives led by children, to make St Luke’s the very best it can be

Year 6 Student Leadership - every child gets a leadership role, engages in a dedicated leadership program and implements student led initiatives. These include:

  • Faith and Mission leaders

  • House Leaders

  • Library Leaders

  • Arts Leaders

  • Environment Leaders

  • Technology Leaders

  • School Captains.

We are very proud to say we have had many past students who have been elected School Captains or on the Year 12 Leadership Team at local secondary schools.

School Tours - our Year 6 children accompany the Principal or Deputy Principal on school tours so prospective parents can get a student perspective of what makes St Luke the Evangelist ‘the school’ for children in the Blackburn South area. Their contributions are insightful, honest and heartfelt.

Year 5- Connecting with Community - reciprocal visits local kinders and early learning centres

Prep Transition Program: Year 5 children engage in each session

Family Conferences - where the student leads the conference to share their learning with their family and the personal/academic goals they will be working on
